Round 2 of the Euro Offroad Series brings the growing series to an all new location after the very small MSV06 club rose to the challenge when asked late last year by series organiser Uwe Rheinard if they thought a venue to bring the EOS to the capital city of Berlin could be found.  Consisting of a mere 8 members, the club made inquiries with city officials.  Keen to support an event that would bring international visitors to the city, over 20 nationalities represented this weekend, they gave approval to the club to use a sports hall next to their onroad track which is located outside in the carpark area.  Located in the city borough of Lichterfelde, together with support from other clubs in the area the hall has been converted into one of the best looking temporary indoor offroad tracks the series has seen yet.

Having being used to build part of the track used at the opening round of the series in Poland, here the track is completely built using the new PVC construction modular system from Polish company AzetX.  This has been possible thanks to the addition of new bendable sections for making curved corners. Experienced at using the click together track, having worked with it on a number of events in Poland, EOS Round 1 hosts ATA provided the man power for the building of the track yesterday.  With the EOS organised by the same people who put on the ETS, they have just confirmed that they have purchased a complete AzetX set-up for use at all future indoor events for the touring car series.

In terms of the track to drive on Race Director Scotty Ernst described the layout, which features a crossover and a wall section, as difficult and technical adding that it is ‘very easy to overdrive’.  In terms of lap times a fast one for 2WD Buggy will be around the 21-second mark.

‘From Race Control’ – Day 1 EOS Berlin

Day 1 of the record entry second round of the Euro Offroad Series taking place in Berlin will be a busy one for drivers with them taking to the track a total of 9 times.  Starting the day with 3 rounds of 2WD practice, this will be followed by the first of 4 qualifiers scheduled per class for the weekend.  With the opening 2WD qualifier completed the action will then switch to 4WD with again three rounds of practice followed by 2 rounds of qualifying for the 4WD cars to bring Day 1 of the event to a close at around 19:00.

Neumann maintains EOS winning record

Joern Neumann pulled off an impressive feat at the opening round of the Euro Offroad Series in Poland taking the overall 4WD Buggy win to maintain his unbeaten run of consecutive victories.  The third season of the indoor series for 1:10 electric offroad, the Durango driver claimed win number 8 by backing up his Leg 1 win in the second A-Main but unlike the first 5-minute encounter he didn’t have it easy. Team Xray’s Renaud Savoya mounted a serious last lap challenge on the German but unfortunately for the French ace he would over jump the double just before the finish line.  Sending his XB4 into the barrier it allowed Neumann to take the leg by 1.8 seconds. With Hupo Honigl, who was running on Savoya’s rear gearbox, spectacularly cartwheeling out of third on the last lap Martin Bayer completed the Top 3.

Commenting on his impressive tally of wins, Neumann said this was by far the hardest one yet.  Struggling to get to terms with this season’s new controlled tyre from Proline, the German was unable to dominate the class as he has done for the past two seasons.  Pleased to get his title defense off to the perfect start, claiming the extra championship point for taking the TQ honours for the race, he said the level of competitions is also a lot tougher this season.

With Neumann able to sit out the third Main, it was a straight race to see who would stand either side of him on the podium.  With the No.1 Durango missing from the grid, it was Bayer who would effectively start from pole position.  The European Champion would lead from the start and after seeing off the attention of Honigl, who like in A1 again crashed in front of the drivers stand while challenging for the lead, would take a relatively easy win over team-mate Savoya.  The Xray 1-2 finish ahead of Kyosho’s David Ronnefalk would see the pair secure the remaining podium places.  Bayer’s second time to finish runner-up, for Savoya the result marks the relative newcomer to electric offroad’s first EOS podium.

Having topped the podium in 2WD, Honigl would not make it in 4WD finishing 4th overall ahead of Ronnefalk and fellow 2WD podium finisher Michal Orlowski.

Elsewhere Neumann made it a doubly successful weekend taking the win in 4WD Short Course ahead of Honigl and young Czech driver Kaja Novotny for the second all Durango podium of the weekend.  It was a clean sweep of wins for Team Durango in Poland with German driver Mirko Morgenstern taking the win in 2WD Short Course ahead of Denmark’s Torben Hojfeldt and Sascha Hengen.

Neumann takes easy 4WD win in A1

Defending Champion Joern Neumann took an easy win in the opening leg of the 4WD Buggy A-Mains at the Euro Offroad Series in Poland. The Top Qualifier led from start to finish despite a mistake first time through the double to head home Durango team-mate Hupo Hönigl by 4-seconds.  Xray’s Martin Bayer who started second came off worst of Neumann’s moment as he hit the out of shape German and fell back to fifth.  Recovering to pass both team-mate Renaud Savoya and Tom Cockerill, the Czech driver would finish third.

Looking to maintain his 100% winning record in 4WD Buggy in the EOS and claim an 8th consecutive win, Neumann was pleased to get the win adding that his team-mate Honigl was ‘very quick’.  Decribing his Orion powered DEX410 as edgy for the first part of the race and then suffering understeer in the second half, he said it was tricky to drive but looking to Leg 2 he said it is ‘manageable’.

Setting the fastest lap of the race, Honigl pushed Neumann hard at the start until a mistake on lap 6 ended his challenge for the win.  The winner of 2WD earlier in the day, he said had a buggy and was comfortable putting pressure on the 4WD World Champion Top Qualifier.  Losing 2-seconds due to his mistake in front of the drivers stand, in which Savoya got caught up, Honigl said the one mistake cost him a chance of winning and with time running out he decided to settle for second.

Bayer said he was ‘just out of luck this time’.  After getting baulked by Neumann’s buggy on the first lap, the European Champion lost further time when he tangled with his team-mate Savoya.  After this he said it was too late to do anything about Neumann.  Bayer was very happy with his XB4’s performance adding that with more luck in A2 he is confident he can challenge Neumann for the win.

Finishing fourth just in front of Michal Orlowski, Savoya said he struggled with his XB4’s handling. Describing it as edgy he said he couldn’t find his rhythm in the race.
